The Playstation 2 is Sony's second video game system, the successor to the playstation 1 and the predecessor to the PlayStation 3. The development of the playstation 2 was announced in March 1999, and it was first released in Japan on March 4, 2000 and in the North American market on October 26, 2000. It was released in Europe on November 24, 2000. The playstation 2 is part of the sixth generation era, and has become the fastest selling gaming system in history, with over 100 million units shipped, speak the previous record holder, the Playstation, by three years and nine months.
The PlayStation 2 had a rather difficult start. Only a few million people had obtained playstation 2 consoles by the end of 2000 due to manufacturing delays. The developers also complained that it was difficult to develop for the system, with little in the way of reference material from Sony for its exotic architecture. Though initially the playstation 2 sold well solely on the basis of the strength of the playstation brand and its backwards compatibility, selling over 900,000 units in the first weekend in Japan.
With the playstation 2 having a good start in japan, this allowed the playstation 2 to tap the large install base established by the slaystation original. Another major selling point over playstation 2's competitor, the sega dreamcast was the playstation 2's ability to play DVDs, which gained it a presence in electronics stores which did not formerly sell video game consoles. Later, Sony gained steam with new development kits for game developers and more PlayStations for consumers.
